Build a secure mobile career where your skills make a real impact

At Amey, we don’t just maintain buildings — we help keep the justice system running safely and effectively. We’re currently recruiting a Mobile Building Engineer to support the Ministry of Justice across the Lancashire England, with a primary base at HMP Wymott.

This is a varied, hands-on role with real purpose. You’ll travel across approximately six secure sites, delivering essential maintenance services that directly support safe, clean and compliant prison environments. If you’re looking for stability, responsibility and long-term progression — this role offers all three.

About the role

As a Mobile Building Engineer, you’ll work across multiple MOJ sites as part of a professional, security-cleared facilities team. You’ll carry out a mix of planned and reactive maintenance, supporting critical systems and responding to site needs as required.

No two days are the same. You’ll have the autonomy to manage your workload, the backing of a long-term contract, and the tools you need to do the job properly — including a company van and fuel card.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Delivering planned and reactive building maintenance across multiple sites
  • Acting as an Authorised Person (AP) in one or more disciplines (training provided)
  • Ensuring full compliance with Amey, MOJ and HMPPS procedures
  • Following strict security and tool control protocols
  • Supporting escorting duties where required
  • Working as part of an on-call and weekend rota

What you’ll bring

We’re looking for reliable, self-motivated engineers who take pride in their work and understand the importance of compliance within secure environments.

You’ll ideally have:

  • A full UK driving licence (essential)
  • A relevant NVQ or trade qualification within a building or maintenance discipline
  • Experience working independently and using initiative
  • Knowledge of building compliance and safety standards (training available)
  • Experience in one or more of the following:
    • Fire door maintenance
    • Fire extinguishers & fire alarm core points
    • Emergency lighting
    • RCDs
    • Water temperature testing
  • IT literacy and basic health & safety knowledge

Don’t worry if you don’t tick every box. If you have transferable skills and the right attitude, we’ll support you with training and development — including progression into AP responsibilities and confined spaces.

Experience in a custodial or secure environment is desirable, but not essential.

Security clearance

This role is subject to Prison Security Clearance and DBS checks. Amey will fully support you through the process.
