A day in the life of a Civil Engineer

Engineering

  • Manage bridge assessment workflows and deliver milestones.
  • Lead site inspections as ITL and STE4, ensuring safety and compliance with Network Rail standards.
  • Prepare assessment reports, structural calculations (Levels 0–2), and Approvals in Principle using tools like Excel, SuperSTRESS, STAAD Pro, and Archie-M.


Management & Mentoring

  • Guide and review junior engineers’ work, ensuring quality and compliance.
  • Share knowledge through mentoring, presentations, and collaborative problem-solving.


Health & Safety

  • Coordinate inspection logistics and brief teams on safe access and emergency protocols.


Innovation & Environment

  • Drive process improvements and embed new technologies (e.g., 3D laser scanning) for efficiency and sustainability.


Commercial & Stakeholder Engagement

  • Develop pricing sheets and maintain clear communication with Network Rail and internal teams to resolve technical queries and scope changes.


Social Impact

  • Support community initiatives and environmental conservation through Social Impact Days.
