We have an exciting opportunity for a Permanent Highway Maintenance Operative (HMO) to join our dynamic Area 7 team.
The standard hours of work are 45 hours per week, working a rotating shift pattern of days and nights, typically one week of day shifts followed by one week
of night shifts. Day shifts are 8 hours and night shifts are 10 hours.
What You'll Do
As a Highway Maintenance Operative, you will play a key role in maintaining and improving the strategic road network by delivering a variety of highways maintenance activities safely and efficiently.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Maintaining high technical standards and delivering effective solutions.
- Attending project briefings as required.
- Ensuring compliance with all relevant health and safety legislation and specifications.
- Managing and mentoring apprentices and operatives, coordinating work activities where required.
- Taking responsibility for the security of vehicles, plant, equipment, and materials under your control.
- Planning work activities and estimating vehicle, plant, and material requirements.
- Carrying out a range of highways maintenance activities, including:
- Vehicle Restraint Systems (VRS)
- Drainage works
- Kerbing
- Fencing
- Walling
- Road sweeping
- Road signing
- Patching repairs
- Traffic management
- Soft estate maintenance
- Driving and operating vehicles and plant equipment, including carrying out routine inspections, basic maintenance checks, and cleaning. A valid HGV licence is desirable.
- Completing records, reports, and required documentation accurately.
- Communicating effectively with colleagues, subcontractors, emergency services, police, clients, customers, and members of the public.
- Reporting health and safety concerns, team issues, or performance concerns to the Supervisor.
What You'll Bring
Essential
- Full UK Driving Licence.
- HGV Class 2 Licence.
- Experience working as a Highway Maintenance Operative or Ganger.
- Experience managing or leading a team.
- Experience delivering emergency response and winter maintenance services.
- Experience working with Chapter 8 and Traffic Management on high-speed roads.
- Personal Highway Safety Certificate (PHSC).
- SSSTS or SMSTS qualification.
Desirable
- CSCS card.
- Experience across a broad range of highways maintenance disciplines.
