The Opportunity

 

We have a fantastic opportunity for a permanent Lead Senior Geotechnical Engineer to join our Consulting team, based in our Belfast office.

 

Our 130 strong Belfast Design Hub delivers a range of local, national and international projects with key clients in Northen Ireland being the Department for Infrastructure (DfI) Roads, DfI Water and Drainage Directorate (WDD) and Translink (Operators for NI Railways). Our multidisciplinary team encapsulates Highway and Rail Engineering, Bridge/Structural Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, River & Coastal Engineering, Environmental Engineering and Traffic Engineering/Transport Planning, as well as being the BIM Centre of Excellence for Amey. This unique ecosystem offers our clients a one-stop shop and offers our staff the opportunity to grow and develop in a knowledge-rich environment, with specialists who are eager to assist and mentor their development.

 

These long-term contracts provide excellent opportunities for technical, engineering, and professional design staff at all stages of their careers, allowing involvement in some of the most exciting and challenging engineering projects associated with the road and rail network in Northern Ireland.

  • Belfast Rapid Transit (BRT)
  • Translink Bridge Refurbishment Package 2
  • Lifecycle management for the DBFO2 Network in Northern Ireland (M1, A4 and A1).
  • Translink Earthworks Asset Management

 

 

The Belfast Geotechnical Team

Our Ground Engineering Team in Belfast has a total of 15 geotechnical practitioners, comprising experienced Geotechnical Engineers and Engineering Geologists, which play a pivotal role on all our major and minor civil/structural engineering schemes.

Our core geotechnical consultancy services include the following:

  • Desk Studies / Feasibility Assessments
  • Ground Investigations – scoping, planning, procuring, supervising and reporting
  • Design of earthworks, rock slopes, reinforced soil, foundations, retaining structures and ground improvement schemes
  • Technical review and Geotechnical Risk Analysis
  • Geotechnical Asset Management

In addition, the Belfast Ground Engineering Team provide input into contract and health and safety documents for Tendering Construction Packages, while offering design support to multi-discipline site teams during construction works on all geotechnical elements.

 

 

 

The role

 

As a Lead Senior Geotechnical Engineer, you will provide effective support and assistance to the Principal Engineer and/or Technical Director on a variety of ground engineering schemes whilst taking the lead on projects and mentoring junior engineers and technicians. Responsibilities include:

 

  • To lead a team to product technically sound engineering solutions, complying with all relevant technical standards and client requirements
  • The preparation and checking of designs, calculations, drawings and documentation as part of the production of scheme deliverables that satisfy the overarching criteria of quality, cost and programme.
  • Overseeing the actions of more junior members of staff undertaking similar tasks and taking responsibility for their actions
  • Responsibility for the commercial success of the projects within their portfolio, controlling budgets and managing the costs associated with the production of deliverables
  • Liaising with client and supplier representatives at peer level, attending progress meetings, responding to queries etc.
  • Significantly contributing to the preparation of bids and the general work winning function
  • Drive effective health and safety practices within the team.

 

What you will bring to us:

 

  • Have achieved Chartered or Incorporated status as defined by the Engineering Council with a relevant professional body.
  • Developed experience and expertise within geotechnical field, gained in an Snr Engineer role or equivalent.
  • Obtained a comprehensive knowledge of technical reports procedures, in accordance with CG 300 & CD 622, and design production in accordance with EC7 and NWR Standards.
  • A understanding of rail earthworks asset management procedures, in accordance with CIV/065.
  • Takes ownership for the preparation and checking of deliverables and can check deliverables to a reasonable standard.
  • Very good working knowledge of relevant software and similar analytical tools (e.g Wallap, SlopeW etc).
  • Demonstrates good commercial awareness and understanding of CDM and risk assessment.
  • Substantially experienced in the management and communication of hazards and risks on projects and ensures appropriate risk mitigation and transference has been applied.
  • Demonstrates a good understanding of interface management, and ensures own deliverables align with deliverables produced by other disciplines.
