We have fantastic opportunities for a permanent Structures Highways Maintenance Operative to join our Area 7 account in Leicester. Travel will be required across the network.  

Working with National Highways, Amey maintains over 700 kilometres of roads across the East Midlands, ensuring the 4.5 million citizens across the East Midlands experience better journeys every day. 

We provide maintenance and response across a vast area of some of the UK's busiest motorways and strategic highways across the east midlands and north of England. As many as 180,000 vehicles a day use certain sections of this vital network. 

 

The standard hours of work 45 hours Monday – Friday days, nights when required 

 

In this role, you will support the Structures Supervisor by carrying out routine and reactive structures maintenance across a wide range of assets, ensuring the network remains safe, accessible, and fully operational. You will work independently and as part of a small team to help maintain bridges, large culverts, gantries, radar masts, trash screens, and other structural assets. 

This role offers you the unique opportunity to play a hands on role in keeping vital infrastructure safe, while developing specialist skills in structures maintenance within a supportive team environment. 

 

What You’ll Do 

  • Carry out routine maintenance across structures such as bridges, large culverts, gantries, radar masts, and trash screens to ensure they remain safe and wellmaintained. 

  • Remove vegetation, overgrowth, and debris from around structural assets, ensuring inspections and access routes are kept clear. 

  • Cover or remove graffiti and undertake minor cosmetic repairs to maintain asset appearance and prevent deterioration. 

  • Support minor structural repairs, including cleaning steelwork, tightening or replacing fixtures, and small patch repairs to brick and concrete. 

  • Conduct visual checks of structures and report defects, hazards, or emerging issues to the Structures Inspector or Supervisor. 

  • Assist in maintaining drainage features connected to structural assets, such as screens and culvert inlets. 

  • Work safely on site by establishing safe work zones, following Amey procedures, and using traffic management support where required. 

  • Accurately record work completed, materials used, and any issues encountered using handheld devices or daily logs.

What You’ll Bring: 

  • A safetyfocused, proactive approach aligned with Amey’s values.  

  • Experience working in highways, civils, construction, drainage, or general maintenance.  

  • Strong handson ability, including the safe use of small tools and equipment.  

  • The ability to work outdoors in all weather and undertake physically demanding tasks.  

  • A full UK driving licence.  

  • (Desirable) Experience with vegetation management, working at height, confined spaces, or similar environments.
