Title:  Senior Engineer - Bridges

Requisition ID:  12098

Amey are a leading provider of full life-cycle engineering, operations and decarbonisation solutions, for transport infrastructure and complex facilities.

Working for us, you’ll be delivering sustainable infrastructure solutions that enhance life and protect our shared future.

Our people are driven by a set of strong values, based on safety, insight and collaboration.

The Opportunity

We have a fantastic opportunity for a permanent Senior Engineer to join our award winning and growing Consulting Structures Team in the South West. The role will primarily involve working on the South West Scheme Delivery Framework for National Highways, with opportunities to work on complex schemes across the UK. As a team, we co-locate with our client at offices in Exeter, Cardiff, Bristol and London, attending the office three days a week with the remaining days worked remotely.

The work spans from feasibility and optioneering all the way through to design and construction. We work across the National Highways network in the South West, which includes large and unique viaducts, culverts, under and overbridges of varying forms, ages, and complexities. We could be designing a strengthening scheme, completing maintenance refurbishments, or executing safety improvements. The variety of scopes and structures on the network means that no two projects are the same.

This opportunity would suit an experienced Engineer, ideally Chartered or Incorporated Engineer, with a good understanding of the DMRB and Eurocodes with respect to highway bridge design, strengthening, refurbishment, and assessment. It is a chance to work on structures locally and see the impact of your work day-to-day on a network you would use. You would be part of a team of around 25 engineers locally of varying levels, supported by 350+ Structures Engineers across the UK with a variety of specialisms. Our focus is on developing and growing organically. As a Senior Engineer, you will play a pivotal role in this process and gain valuable exposure for your career development.

The Role

As a Senior Structures Engineer, you will provide effective support and assistance to your Design Team Leader on a variety of structures schemes whilst taking the Design Lead role on projects and mentoring and managing teams of junior engineers and technicians. Responsibilities include:

  • Leading a team, producing technically sound engineering solutions.
  • Taking ownership and leading projects from start to finish, from preparing the quotation all the way to handover.
  • Preparation and checking of designs, calculations, drawings, and documentation as part of the production of scheme deliverables that satisfy the criteria of quality, cost, and programme.
  • Overseeing the actions of more junior members of staff undertaking similar tasks and taking responsibility for their actions.
  • Contributing to the professional development of junior staff and acting as a Delegated Engineer.
  • Liaising with client and supplier representatives at peer level, attending progress meetings, and responding to queries.
  • Managing a small, locally based single-discipline technical team and taking responsibility for the delivery of their workload.
  • Contributing to the preparation of bids and general work-winning functions.
  • Driving effective Health and Safety practices within the team.
  • Experience with sustainability practices in engineering.
  • Strong project management skills, particularly in managing large-scale multi-discipline infrastructure projects.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.

What You Will Bring to Us:

  • Senior Engineer who challenges conventional approaches and is driven by developing innovative engineering solutions. Exhibits strong critical thinking and leadership skills, with the ability to adapt processes and mentor team members to achieve optimal project outcomes
  • Developed experience and expertise within the structures field, probably gained in an Engineer role or equivalent.
  • An ability to produce or oversee the production of technically sound engineering solutions, complying with all relevant technical standards and client’s requirements (DMRB, Eurocodes, best practice guidance such as CIRIA, etc.).
  • Takes ownership of the preparation and checking of deliverables and can check deliverables to a reasonable standard.
  • Very good working knowledge of relevant software and similar analytical tools (e.g., LUSAS, Autodesk Structural Bridge Design).
  • Demonstrates good commercial awareness.
  • Has a good understanding of CDM and risk assessment applied to both design and construction.
  • Substantially experienced in the management and communication of hazards and risks on projects and ensures appropriate risk mitigation and transference has been applied.
  • Demonstrates a good understanding of interface management and ensures own deliverables align with deliverables produced by other disciplines.
  • Incorporated or Chartered status with the ICE or IStructE, or an equivalent professional licence gained through the professional institution to which the individual is aligned, is desirable and may be essential on particular contracts.
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in an appropriate subject or demonstrable equivalent further learning.
