Title: Lead Senior Electrical Engineer

We have a fantastic opportunity for a permanent Lead Senior Electrical Engineer to join our Consulting team. With shared office space in Birmingham, Telford, Manchester, Stafford, Sheffield and Bristol, we welcome applications from Lead Senior Electrical Engineers across these regions.
The standard hours of work are 40 Hours per week.

The role
At Amey we have ambitious growth plans for our Consulting Built Environment team and are looking to recruit a Lead Senior Electrical Engineer to lead on Building Services design. Typical day-to-day duties will include undertaking condition surveys and feasibility studies, developing scope of works and design briefs with clients, advising on the technical elements of projects, site inspections during construction and technical oversight of sub-consultants.
We deliver projects to a wide range of clients, including the Ministry of Defence (MOD), Ministry of Justice (MOJ), Local Authorities, National Health Service (NHS), Transport, Education, Transport for Wales, Housing and Utilities sectors.
Key responsibilities:
- Acts as a technical team leader, delivering compliant, high‑quality engineering outputs while working independently and supervising junior staff.
- Consistently demonstrates behaviours aligned with a Lead Senior Engineer, actively pursuing further professional development toward promotion.
- Manages delivery of electrical and building services elements on multi‑disciplinary projects across Rail, Transportation, MoJ, MoD, and Education sectors.
- Leads the preparation, checking, and approval of designs, calculations, drawings, and documentation, ensuring quality, cost, and programme objectives are met.
- Holds responsibility for commercial performance, including budget control and cost management within their project portfolio.
- Acts as Design Team Lead, maintaining a full understanding of project scope on both minor and major projects.
- Engages with clients and suppliers at senior level, including presenting and defending technical and commercial proposals.
- Plays a significant role in work winning, leading bids and preparing technical and commercial submissions with accountability to the Delivery Director.
- Applies engineering theory to complex or ambiguous situations, managing design interfaces, CDM responsibilities, and project risks.
- Demonstrates strong technical competence, communication skills, software capability, and assumes people‑management responsibilities when required.
What you will bring to us:
- Demonstrates strong professional relationships with clients and suppliers, maintaining an effective external network that supports business development and bidding activities.
- Applies engineering theory and judgement to complex, ambiguous situations, adapting concepts to achieve robust technical solutions.
- Extensive experience in the design and specification process, acting as Design Team Leader where appropriate and checking designs to a high standard.
- Highly proficient with engineering design and analysis software, able to review, validate, and approve work produced by others.
- Excellent understanding of the supply chain, with strong knowledge of supplier capabilities and established industry contacts.
- Strong oral and written communicator, capable of presenting proposals, delivering training, and producing high‑quality technical reports.
- Advanced knowledge of CDM regulations, risk assessment, and hazard management, with capability to act as Lead Senior Designer when required.
- Effective at managing technical interfaces, resolving clashes, and ensuring alignment between own discipline and others.
- Proven people management and supervisory capability, able to lead a medium‑sized, single‑discipline technical team and mentor junior staff.
- Acts as a day‑to‑day engineering lead on projects, including roles such as Contractor’s Responsible Engineer (CRE) where applicable.
- Demonstrates strong accountability, planning, prioritisation, and decision‑making, consistently delivering on commitments and resolving issues proactively.
- Skilled in analysing complex and conflicting information, identifying root causes, and driving continuous improvement in processes and delivery.
- Experienced Electrical / Building Services Engineer, delivering technically sound designs across HV/LV, lighting, power, life‑safety, IT, and security systems.
- Holds relevant qualifications and professional credentials, including HNC/HND or degree, CSCS card, CIBSE (or equivalent) membership, and proficiency with tools such as AutoCAD, Amtech, Hevacomp, Relux/Dialux, TAS, IES, and Revit (advantageous).
