The Opportunity

 

We have a fantastic opportunity for a permanent Rail Systems Engineer and Design Integration Engineers at all levels (Engineer/ Senior Engineer/ Lead Senior Engineer) to join our System Engineering team, within our Consulting Rail division. With shared office locations in Birmingham, Derby, York, Bristol, Manchester, and Cardiff, we welcome applications from candidates across these regions and from elsewhere in the UK.

The role

 

You’ll play a pivotal role in delivering innovative rail solutions, working across the whole railway system including rolling stock integration, infrastructure, operations, and maintenance.

 

Responsibilities include:

 

Rail Systems Engineer

 

  • Apply Systems Engineering techniques to define, integrate and deliver, over time, the solution to the CVL Transformation as part of the Wales and Borders project.
  • Supporting the management of the requirements management and V&V function on the CVL Transformation, including:
  • Developing of the Project’s requirements from the Client Remit, and managing change.
  • Managing the satisfaction linkages between different levels of requirements.
  • Managing the apportionment of requirements into scope packages for delivery.
  • Supporting the project’s Verification of the requirements.
  • Supporting and undertaking the project’s Validation activities against the requirements.
  • Manage the periodic reporting of metrics.
  • Managing the integration of complex and novel areas of integration – in particular between the infrastructure and the new rolling stock fleets.
  • Managing the integration of the infrastructure change with Operations and Maintenance organisations, and Train Operators.
  • Supporting integration testing between the new hybrid vehicles and the transformed infrastructure.
  • Prepare and review technical reports and programmes of work.

 

Design Integration Engineers:

 

  • Apply Systems Engineering techniques to define, integrate, and deliver solutions for the CVL Transformation and wider Wales & Borders project.
  • Manage requirements development from Client Remit, including change control, satisfaction linkages, apportionment into delivery packages, and maintaining the requirements database and compliance matrix (V&V).
  • Support verification and validation activities, integration testing, and periodic reporting of metrics.
  • Prepare and review technical reports, programmes of work, and ensure cross-discipline contract requirements are captured and communicated.
  • Produce and implement Systems Integration Plans (SIP), Systems Engineering Management Plans (SEMP), and Safety, Reliability, Availability, and Maintainability (S-RAM) Plans; support setting RAM targets.
  • Advise Engineering Managers and Project Managers on appropriate systems engineering processes and engineering management within the End-to-End Stage Gate process.
  • Facilitate impact assessments for project changes and manage the IDC process through to closure.
  • Manage integration of infrastructure with new rolling stock fleets, operations, maintenance organisations, and train operators.
  • Support Programme Engineering Manager in applying EMMa and systems engineering processes across the portfolio and identify best practices in design integration and engineering management.
  • Undertake the role of nominated Engineering Manager in accordance with Amey processes and client/industry standards.
  • Collaborate with Head of Engineering, Regional Directors, Discipline Leads, and Managers to drive technical excellence and continuous improvement on multi-disciplinary projects.

 

 

 

What you will bring to us:

 

  • Developed experience and expertise in the application of systems engineering processes, probably gained in an engineer role or equivalent within Rail sector.
  • Demonstrable experience in the application and delivery of requirements management and V&V within major multi-disciplinary rail infrastructure projects.
  • Experience using Bentley ComplyPro or IBM DOORS.
  • Proven track record in the delivery of rail engineering designs in a specific discipline with an innovative approach to solving client problems
  • Experience in understanding, interpreting and communicating the technical requirements of our contracts and, in particular, specifications and appropriate standards.
  • Experience of working on multi-disciplinary rail projects. Knowledge across several railway disciplines or reasonable experience in at least one specific discipline.
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in an appropriate subject or demonstrable equivalent further learning
  • Comprehensive knowledge of design processes and procedures relevant to the systems engineering discipline
  • Thorough understanding of CDM regulations and the principles of ‘Safe by Design’, combined with strong knowledge of Systems Engineering within the rail environment.
  • A solid grasp of engineering management practices for delivering complex, multi-disciplinary railway infrastructure projects
  • Working collaboratively with colleagues at all levels and maintaining a client-focused approach to service delivery.
  • Excellent communication skills, effectively engage with clients, suppliers, developers, and consultants, while demonstrating strong teamwork and a commitment to meeting strict deadlines.
