The Opportunity 

 

We have a fantastic opportunity for a permanent Senior Highways Civil Engineer / NEC Project Manager to join our Consulting Highways design hub at Stafford. This is a hybrid role, offering you flexibility to work between the office and home.  

 

Amey have been working with Staffordshire County Council since 2014 to manage and maintain the county's highways infrastructure. We take pride in delivering exceptional infrastructure services across 6,000km of Staffordshire, ensuring roads, cycle routes, bridges, tunnels, lighting, drainage, traffic signals, trees, and land are well-maintained and improved to enhance the lives of local residents and communities.

 

The role 

 

As a Highways Senior Civil Engineer, you'll play a crucial role in managing the design and delivery of projects on the Highways account. This would allow for a wide-ranging scope of mainly medium sized projects but with some larger projects included, with recent schemes being major bypasses, trunk road improvements and new major infrastructure sites preparation. There will be a particular focus on site supervision acting as a NEC Project Manager for site within Staffordshire. Accreditation as an ICE NEC Project Manager would be beneficial.

 Responsibilities include: 

 

Drive effective health and safety practices within the team 

Manage sites as a NEC Project Manager. Current Staffordshire schemes are developer S278 schemes through to £ 10million plus trunk road improvements schemes, with schemes in excess of £ 20 million being progressed for delivery. 

Assist design team leader, providing technical advice, guidance and supervision as appropriate to your team, associated technical teams, operational managers, internal and external clients/stakeholders.  

Managing and leading the preparation and checking of designs in accordance with DMRB or other national design codes, calculations, drawings and documentation as part of the production of scheme deliverables that satisfy the overarching criteria of quality, cost and programme. 

Responsibility for the commercial success of the projects within their project portfolio, controlling budgets and managing the costs associated with the production of deliverables and monitoring KPI’. Particular focus will be on the construction stage. 

Liaising with client and supplier representatives at peer level and higher, including presenting proposals, attending progress/team meetings and responding to a variety of queries.  

Significantly contributing to and leading the preparation of resource, programming, bids and the general work winning function, taking responsibility for the preparation of technical and commercial offers 

 

 

What you will bring to us: 

 

Highway construction site experience and expertise within the highways design and delivery technical field, probably gained in a Civil Engineer role or equivalent and be able to act as the delegated NEC Project Manager on multi million-pound schemes. 

Also be able to produce and assist in the production of technically sound engineering solutions including highway drainage, complying with all relevant technical standards and client requirements. 

Experience of managing project related tasks associated with the management of health, safety and welfare, e.g. Amey’s Integrated Management System and the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations. 

Capable of acting as engineering site lead for a larger project where required under the terms of the commission. 

Knowledge, understanding and experience of design and specification process with ability to manage others. Demonstrates a full understanding of the project scope and acts as Design Team Lead for both minor and major projects. 

Highly experienced with relevant software and similar analytical tools, in particular Micro-drainage. Good ability to check work produced by others and able to validate and approve the use of new tools. Lead on innovation including carbon reduction. 

Demonstrates an excellent understanding of CDM and risk assessment. Highly experienced in the management and communication of hazards and risks on projects and ensures appropriate risk mitigation and transference has been applied. Is capable of acting as Principal Designer for all projects. 

Supervisory and people manager skills. Capable of managing or influencing the actions of technical teams regardless of office location, project or account, including the multidisciplinary environment and to undertake the people manager role.
