The Opportunity 

 

We have a fantastic opportunity for a permanent Senior Highways Civil Engineer to join our Consulting Highways design hub at Stafford. This is a hybrid role, offering you flexibility to work between the office and home.  

 

Amey have been working with Staffordshire County Council since 2014 to manage and maintain the county's highways infrastructure. We take pride in delivering exceptional infrastructure services across 6,000km of Staffordshire, ensuring roads, cycle routes, bridges, tunnels, lighting, drainage, traffic signals, trees, and land are well-maintained and improved to enhance the lives of local residents and communities. 

 

The role 

 

As a Highways Senior Civil Engineer, you'll play a crucial role in managing the design and delivery of projects on the Highways account. This would allow for a wide-ranging scope of mainly small and medium sized projects but with some larger projects included, with recent schemes being major bypasses, trunk road improvements and new major infrastructure sites preparation. There will be a particular focus drainage design, developing detailed highway drainage designs, checking developer S111/S278 drainage designs and assisting with developing in house drainage team capabilities. Micro-drainage experience is highly preferable. 

 

 Responsibilities include: 

 

To lead a team to product technically sound highways engineering solutions, complying with all relevant technical standards and client requirements 

The preparation and checking of designs in accordance with DMRB and other national design codes, calculations, drawings and documentation as part of the production of scheme deliverables that satisfy the overarching criteria of quality, cost and programme. 

Overseeing the actions of more junior members of staff undertaking similar tasks and taking responsibility for their actions 

Responsibility for the commercial success of the projects within their portfolio, controlling budgets and managing the costs associated with the production of deliverables  

Liaising with client and supplier representatives at peer level, attending progress meetings, responding to queries etc.  

Contributing to the preparation of bids and the general work winning function 

Drive effective health and safety practices within the team 

 

What you will bring to us: 

 

Developed highways design experience and expertise within the Highways Civil Engineering field, probably gained in an Engineer role or equivalent 

Able to produce technically sound engineering solutions including highways drainage, complying with all relevant technical standards and client requirements, working unsupervised and supervising more junior members of staff undertaking similar tasks  

Experienced in undertaking project related tasks associated with the management of health, safety and welfare, e.g. Amey’s Integrated Management System and the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations  

Capable of acting as Engineering Design Lead for a larger project where required under the terms of the commission. 

Very good working knowledge of relevant software and similar analytical tools, in particular Micro-drainage. 

Demonstrates good commercial awareness 

Has a very good understanding of CDM and risk assessment. Substantially experienced in the management and communication of hazards and risks on projects and ensures appropriate risk mitigation and transference has been applied. Can act as Principal Designer for appropriate projects 

Successful completion of either the professional review or end point assessment, resulting in the award of Incorporated or Chartered status or an equivalent professional licence 

Incorporated or Chartered status or an equivalent professional licence gained through the professional institution to which the individual is aligned
