The Opportunity
We are seeking Archivists to join our Infrastructure team in Scotland. You will play a key role in preserving, structuring, and digitising technical records and historical data to support both operational delivery and strategic planning.
This role is critical to supporting requirements across both Network Bridges and Major Bridge Structures on the NMC SW contract for Transport Scotland. Amey manages both the Southwest and Northeast Trunk Road Network Management contracts, with the Southwest being awarded in 2020 and the Northeast in 2022. These are 8-year contracts, extendable up to 12 years. In addition to these long-term contracts, we also have a diverse portfolio of major roads, bridges and transportation and civil design projects with Transport Scotland, Local Authorities, and established contractors across the country.
These long-term contracts provide excellent opportunities for technical, engineering, and professional design staff at all stages of their careers to be involved in some of the most exciting and challenging engineering projects associated with Scotland’s arterial road network.
The role
- To establish a structured, standardised, and accessible archive of bridge-related asset records for both Network Bridge Structures and Major Bridge Structures, supporting Transport Scotland’s operational and strategic needs.
- Develop and maintain structured archives for infrastructure projects, including drawings, reports, assessments, and correspondence.
- Ensure compliance with internal and external data governance and archiving standards.
- Locate, retrieve and organise historical records and data to support ongoing and future works.
- Collaborate with digital transformation teams to migrate legacy records into modern platforms.
- Provide training and guidance to project teams on document handling and archiving protocols.
- Contribute to community benefit reporting and knowledge-sharing initiatives.
- Assess and digitise records from various sources including hard drives, CDs, DVDs, paper files, and external archives (e.g. Mitchell Library).
- Establish a standardised format for asset records compatible with the Structures Management System and standalone databases and agree with client.
What you will bring to us:
- Ability to assess, retrieve, and digitise records from diverse formats: paper, CD-ROMs, DVDs, pen drives, hard drives, and current electronic systems.
- Proficient in digital archiving platforms and metadata tagging to ensure efficient searchability and traceability of records.
- Experience in migrating legacy infrastructure documentation into modern digital systems while preserving data integrity.
- Ability to identify, assess, and incorporate valuable records from external sources
- High accuracy in cataloguing and formatting records, especially technical documents critical to infrastructure safety and planning.
- Proactive in identifying missing or inconsistent records and resolving archival gaps independently.
- Works effectively with internal stakeholders.
- Clear and professional communication with technical and non-technical audiences, including reporting progress to client managers.
- Comfortable working across both Network Bridges and Major Bridges, adjusting to different project scopes and priorities.
- Capable of managing large volumes of data systematically over a multi-year contract duration.
Qualifications
- Degree or professional qualification in Archival Studies, Information Management, or a related field.
Skills
- Strong understanding of digital archiving systems and metadata standards.
- Excellent organisational and communication skills.
- Familiarity with civil infrastructure projects and technical documentation.
- Experience in searching and consolidating records from varied formats and sources.
Experience
- Experience in infrastructure, engineering, or public sector environments is desirable but not essential.
