The Opportunity
We have a fantastic opportunity for a permanent Senior Traffic Engineer to join our Consulting Highways team. This is a hybrid role and with our office based in Manchester we welcome applications from across the area
Amey and Trafford Council are working in partnership to deliver environmental and infrastructure services for Trafford. The One Trafford Partnership maintains and improves nearly 800 km of roads, 17,000 km of footways, 150 structures, 30,000 street columns and illuminated signs and 37 parks, in addition to collecting waste from 97,000 households. Innovative, new technology will be introduced across the services to deliver a more efficient approach for the Council and the residents of Trafford.
The Trafford Highways Consulting account provides the local highway authority function on behalf of Trafford Council. It comprises approximately 40 engineers, technicians and support staff and is organised into four teams dealing with Traffic, Development Control & Drainage, Highway Maintenance and Highway Structures.
The role
We are seeking an experienced and motivated Senior Traffic Engineer to undertake design and provide technical support within the Traffic and Transportation design team. This is an excellent opportunity to assist the Principal Engineer working on a varied range of traffic management and public realm projects. Responsibilities include:
- Preparation of solutions at various design stages of a project; preparation of drawings, reports, specifications and estimates
- Oversee the design, development and implementation of traffic engineering solutions including Traffic Regulation Orders, speed limits, traffic calming measures, pedestrian crossings and minor improvement schemes
- Support and assist in planning, monitoring and reporting of project resources and finances, including all gateway controls
- Prepare technical reports for both internal and external purposes
- Provide technical support including project advice and design assessments
- Prepare / check project design briefs
- Manage multi-disciplinary teams to deliver a wide variety of complex projects
- Develop and deliver of a programme of works for the Client, managing all stages.
- Undertake technical work checks and approvals of drawings, Health and Safety packages and communications programmes
- Resolve technical problems and issues to support the delivery of projects or design objectives
- Resolve enquiries from Councillors, the public and stakeholders to support the delivery of the contract, projects or design objectives
- Build and maintain excellent relationships with internal and external business partners, customers and clients
- Manage, monitor and report financial and resources stage assessments for Senior Management and Clients
- Prepare and develop bid opportunities with partners and stakeholders
- Reporting back to DfT /TfGM and other Stakeholders, supporting programme development and bids
- Assist less experienced colleagues in ensuring compliance with pre-defined standards
- Assist with continuous improvement in the services provided by the team
- Take ownership of personal development in order to build professional capability
What you will bring to us:
- HNC/BEng/MEng in Civil Engineering or similar and be working towards or have attained Chartered status of the Institution of Civil Engineers / Institution of Highways and Transportation or similar.
- Client focused approach to service delivery
- Design experience within a traffic engineering environment
- Knowledge of relevant design standards including the Design Manual for Roads and Bridges and Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions
- Experience of designing and implementing Traffic Regulation Orders
- Experience of designing a variety of schemes; parking management, cycling, traffic calming, priority working, minor highways, bus lanes etc
- Experience of undertaking consultation with residents/businesses, stakeholders, councillors and other third parties
- A proven knowledge of Community Engagement and how it can be utilised in a Traffic & Transportation environment
- Knowledge of relevant legislation including the Road Traffic Regulation Act; the Local Authorities Traffic Orders (Procedure) (England and Wales) Regulations; the Traffic Management Act; the Highways Act and the Highways (Road Humps) Regulations
- Awareness of Road Safety Audit procedures
- Experience in working on both Local Authority and Capital maintenance and /or developer-led schemes as part of a multi-disciplinary design team
- Knowledge of traffic and / or highway design products, standards and protocols for scheme development and delivery
- Experience in policy and report writing
- Experience of developing Highway Capital programmes
- Experience of budget monitoring and project management
- Understanding of street works permit schemes
- Understanding of CDM Regulations
- Experience in developing safe systems of work and risk assessments
