We have a fantastic opportunity for a Principal Consultant – AI Strategy & Implementation Lead to join our Digital, Data and Technology Team within our Consulting Business Unit.

As a Principal Consultant, you will be an established leader within our DDaT team and will work alongside an experienced pool of other principals, technical experts, consultants within the team, wider Amey and across the industry liaising with the Practice Leads and the Delivery Directors.


This role sits at the intersection of strategy and technology with a focus on identifying high-impact AI use cases and designing end-to-end AI roadmaps that align with our clients’ objectives and deliver return on investment. As a key member of the team, you will advise clients on how to get started with their AI journey, guide them through their transform and ensure delivery of robust AI solutions that meet the clients strategic and operational goals.  

 

Your will be responsible for :

 

  • Creating  and developing relationships with high-profile, blue chip clients up to Director level in the UK and abroad and to gain their confidence to gain new work or expand existing commissions
  • Working with clients up to corporate level to provide objective advice, create value and deliver solutions to their business in the areas of asset management, investment, finance and operations.
  • Understanding the stakeholder environment of clients and contribute to the formation of strategy in relation to the management of their infrastructure assets
  • Undertaking appropriate analysis to understand client’s risk, performance and cost profile and support any change process in order to meet the client’s objectives
  • Presenting the findings and solutions to clients at board level/ C-Suite and below.
  • Collaborating with Amey colleagues to develop the company profile and enhance the overall offering that Amey takes to market
  • Developing innovative Data Science and AI solutions to challenging problems within the infrastructure sector either on existing commissions or by attracting research and development funding
  • Taking responsibility for the delivery of projects that meet or exceed the expectations of the client
  • Keeping abreast of the technological and regulatory advancements in the AI industry and supporting the education both internally and externally

 

Tasks :

  • Develop personal expertise and support the development of fellow team members
  • Take sole or joint responsibility for the development of a service area within the business
  • Work with Delivery, Market and Practice Leads to develop annual business objectives, plans and budgets for business area
  • Ensure projects are delivered in compliance with the Project Control System to agreed standards and targets
  • Full responsibility to deliver or exceed the Company's agreed financial expectation for the projects in terms of value, margin and cash
  • To act a bid lead on tenders for significant bid opportunities.
  • Carry out line management duties, as required
  • Deputise for Head of Practice, when required
  • Manage project(s) and ensure sufficient capable resources to meet deadlines.
  • Forecast, monitor and report the financial performance of projects
  • Ensure compliance with Health, Safety, Environmental and Assurance regulations.
  • Ensure that all team members operate according to One Amey principles and have a clear understanding of systems and processes.
  • With support of commercial team, ensure that contracts are in place before work commences including sub contracts and purchase orders for suppliers and sub consultants. Approve expenditure to the level specified for Band D post holders.

  • Reports to the Head of Practice
  • Collaborates closely with other Principal Consultants in the team and other parts of Amey Consulting
  • Key relationships with external clients, other Amey Divisions, suppliers and sub-contractors
  • The contract management team
  • Internal communications team

To support our growth plans for 2026 and beyond we are inviting applications from suitably experienced and qualified Principal Consultants who are looking for an opportunity to showcase their skills in a high performing team environment. You will help set the direction, broaden our scope into new markets, establish quality standards and continue to create tailored digital infrastructure solutions.

We want to hear from you if you have:

 

  • Master's degree preferably in engineering, science or another technical or related field; advanced degree or MBA is advantageous
  • Extensive post-university technology- and strategy-related experience, in a professional services, blue-chip, industry or start up environment with a proven record of high performance
  • Strong managerial experience in top-tier strategy consulting or managerial experience in IT consulting
  • Extensive experience working closely with clients in the physical infrastructure sector at a senior level, providing advice and solutions based on analysis of performance risk and cost
  • Significant experience in program/project management or change management in the infrastructure sector with knowledge of financial and contract management control systems
  • Proven track record of managing technical work and directing teams in advanced data science and analytics projects
  • An established network of senior stakeholders across the transport infrastructure sector with a proven ability to build and grow long-term client partnerships
  • High level skills and track record in  AI, advanced analytics, data science or information management related to infrastructure (e.g. infrastructure monitoring, inspection and maintenance; understanding and predicting asset behaviour)
  • Combination of strong strategic and AI abilities with a passion for technology and moving with the pace of the advancements in the industry
  • Highly professional, self starter with ability to work in unfamiliar business areas and determination to provide the most effective and appropriate solutions to clients
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and strong ability to communicate ideas clearly at all levels
  • Ability to both work in and lead a team and to deliver and accept peer review as a matter of course
  • Adaptable and flexible, with the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment. 
  • Willingness to travel
