The Opportunity

 

We have a fantastic opportunity for a permanent Assistant Geotechnical Engineer to join our Consulting Highways team, based in our Belfast office.

Our 130 strong Belfast Design Hub delivers a range of local, national and international projects for clients including Department for Infrastructure Roads, Translink, National Highways, Transport Scotland and Network Rail. Our multidisciplinary team encapsulates Highway Engineering, Bridge/Structural Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, River & Coastal Engineering, Environmental Engineering and Traffic Engineering/Transport Planning, as well as being the BIM Centre of Excellence for Amey. This unique ecosystem offers our clients a one-stop shop and offers our staff the opportunity to grow and develop in a knowledge-rich environment, with specialists who are eager to assist and mentor their development.

The Belfast Geotechnical Team

Our Ground Engineering Team in Belfast has a total of 15 geotechnical practitioners, comprising experienced Geotechnical Engineers and Engineering Geologists, which play a pivotal role on all our major and minor civil/structural engineering schemes.

Our core geotechnical consultancy services include the following:

  • Desk Studies / Feasibility Assessments
  • Ground Investigations – scoping, planning, procuring, supervising and reporting
  • Design of earthworks, rock slopes, reinforced soil, foundations, retaining structures and ground improvement schemes
  • Technical review and Geotechnical Risk Analysis
  • Geotechnical Asset Management

In addition, the Belfast Ground Engineering Team provide input into Contract Documents and Health and Safety Documents for Tendering Construction Packages, while offering design support to multi-discipline site teams during construction works on all geotechnical elements.

 

The role

Our Assistant Geotechnical Engineer will play an important part in delivering geotechnical engineering projects for our clients in NI, RoI and in England, Wales and Scotland.

Role Specific Responsibilities include:

  • Being responsible for site investigation and design deliverables, as well as providing support to more senior staff within the geotechnical design team on highways and rail projects including: 
  • Production of feasibility and other technical reports, including documents in accordance with CG 300 & CD 622. 
  • Producing technical specifications for associated ground engineering construction works. 
  • Planning, programming and quantity estimation of ground investigations.
  • Design production in accordance with EC7 and NWR Standards.
  • Undertake the role as Earthworks Examiner (EE), in accordance with CIV065.
  • Conduct walkover surveys, earthwork inspections and construction supervision.
  • Support the development of Graduate Engineers, Degree Apprentices and Technicians. 
  • Working to an agreed programme to deliver on time, on budget and in line with Client’s requirements.
  • Keep up to date with your own personal development to ensure the natural growth of the team and progression with your chosen professional institution 

What you will bring to us:

  • You have a Bachelors or Masters degree (BSc/BEng, MEng/MSc) in Civil Engineering or a Geotechnical/Geological Science.
  • Are working towards, or have achieved, Chartered or Incorporated status as defined by the Engineering Council, Engineers Ireland, Geological Society of London, Institute of Geologists of Ireland or another relevant professional body.
  • Have an appreciation of technical governance procedures and how they are applied within a consulting engineering environment 
  • You can demonstrate developing experience and expertise within the relevant technical field, gained in a Graduate Engineer role or equivalent.
  • You can contribute to the production of technically sound engineering solutions, complying with all relevant technical standards and client requirements, working under supervision.
  • Have the ability to use relevant design software (Wallap, SlopeW etc);
  • You are experienced in undertaking project related tasks associated with health, safety and welfare, e.g. Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 
  • You can demonstrate an understanding of technical governance procedures within a consulting engineering environment 

Desirable Previous Experience, Technical Competencies & Qualifications:

  • Valid Northern Ireland Personal Track Safety (NIR PTS)
  • Valid Construction Skills Register Card (CSR)
  • Demonstrable experience in delivery of highway and rail schemes
